A UK mobile plan does not automatically roam in Bali under European roaming rules. Indonesia sits outside the European roaming zone, so EE, O2, Vodafone UK, and Three apply their own passes, destination groups, allowances, and fair-use terms.
This Bali eSIM guide for travellers from the UK explains when UK roaming makes sense, when a local Indonesian SIM is better value, how to keep your British number active for bank texts, and what happens when you collect an eSIM or physical SIM at Bali Airport.
Quick answer for UK travellers
- Keeping your UK number is the priority: Use a compatible dual-SIM phone. Leave the UK line available for texts and use the Indonesian line for mobile data.
- Your trip is short and roaming is included: Your existing EE, O2, Vodafone, or Three plan may be enough. Check Indonesia specifically rather than assuming worldwide coverage.
- You need maps, Grab, Gojek, video, or hotspot data: Compare a local 28-day package with the total cost and data limit of your roaming option.
- Your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked: Choose a local eSIM and keep the physical UK SIM in the phone.
- You are unsure how much data to buy: Estimate it with our Bali data usage calculator.
Our local plans range from 3 GB to 68 GB and are available through XL, Tri, and IM3. Each plan starts with 28 days of validity. You can top up later under the operator’s current package and validity rules. eSIM and physical SIM prices may differ by up to Rp50,000.
UK roaming and a local Bali SIM solve different problems
Roaming keeps your UK number in place and requires little setup. That is useful when your plan already covers Indonesia, your trip is brief, and your data needs are modest. A local SIM gives you an Indonesian +62 number, a larger choice of data packages, and staff-assisted activation at the airport.
O2 lists Indonesia in its Zone 2 travel destinations. Three lists Indonesia among its Go Roam destinations. EE uses destination-based roaming passes and allowances. Vodafone UK also varies roaming access and charges by plan and destination. These products change, so check your account or carrier’s destination checker shortly before departure.
| Option | Useful when | Check before departure |
|---|---|---|
| UK roaming | Your plan already includes suitable Indonesia roaming | Daily charge, activation trigger, allowance, speed, calls, texts, and fair-use terms |
| Global travel eSIM | You only need data across several countries | Many plans are data-only and do not include a local +62 number |
| Local Bali eSIM | Your unlocked phone supports eSIM and you want local service | Registration and activation take place at our airport counter |
| Local physical SIM | Your unlocked phone has a nano-SIM tray | Store your UK SIM safely if you remove it |
Compare the full trip, not one advertised day. A daily pass used on ten days can cost more than expected. A pass can also start when background data connects, depending on the carrier’s rules.
Stop background data from starting a roaming session
Email sync, cloud photo uploads, automatic app updates, weather widgets, and messaging notifications can use data before you open an app. If your UK plan charges by the day or session, that background traffic may trigger it.
- Turn off data roaming on the UK line before the flight lands.
- After activation, select the Indonesian line for mobile data.
- Review automatic mobile-data switching on dual-SIM phones.
- Pause cloud backups and large downloads unless you are using Wi-Fi.
- Check how your UK provider charges calls, voicemail, SMS, and Wi-Fi Calling abroad.
Receiving a security text can be treated differently from answering a call or accessing voicemail. Check the rules for your exact plan rather than relying on advice written for another EE, O2, Vodafone, or Three tariff.
Will a UK iPhone work with a Bali eSIM?
Recent UK-market iPhones support eSIM. Apple lists the UK iPhone 16 as supporting nano-SIM and eSIM, including dual-eSIM use. A phone bought in the UK may therefore use a local eSIM while the UK physical SIM remains installed.
Open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” indicates that the iPhone is unlocked. Model support alone is not enough because a carrier-locked phone can still display an eSIM menu.
Samsung and Google Pixel compatibility depends on the exact model, sales region, software, and carrier status. Send us the full model number if you are uncertain. Do not rely on the marketing name alone.
Can the local eSIM be installed in the UK?
You can order online before leaving the UK, but this local Indonesian eSIM is not installed remotely. The QR code is issued and activated at the airport counter as part of the operator’s tourist-SIM registration process.
Bring your passport, a screenshot of the phone’s IMEI, and the required registration photo. The QR code can be scanned once, so confirm which device will hold the eSIM before installation. The 28-day validity begins when the SIM and data package are activated.
A global travel eSIM may be installed before departure, but it may provide data only. Our local eSIM includes an Indonesian +62 number and supports calls and SMS. Additional credit or the relevant package benefit may be needed for chargeable calls and messages.
Collect your SIM after arriving at Bali Airport

After Immigration, baggage collection, and Customs, continue through the international arrival exit. The XLSMART counter is immediately to the left. Google Maps may still display the location as XL Axiata Official Partner – Bali SIM Card & eSIM Airport Pickup.
- Opening hours: Daily, 4:00 AM–2:00 AM
- Typical activation time: About five minutes when the documents and compatible unlocked phone are ready
- Staff assistance: Registration, installation, mobile-data settings, and connection testing
- Delayed flight: Collect the order at any time during opening hours
Many journeys from the UK involve a connection and can arrive late at night. Check the scheduled arrival time in Bali, not the departure time in Britain. If you land between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, the counter will reopen at 4:00 AM.

Open the airport counter in Google Maps
What happens at the counter?
- Show your order confirmation and passport.
- Confirm the phone model, IMEI, lock status, and preferred operator.
- Choose XL, Tri, or IM3 and confirm eSIM or physical SIM.
- Complete the operator’s tourist-SIM registration requirements.
- Let the staff install the SIM or scan the eSIM QR code.
- Wait while the staff tests mobile data and confirms the connection.

Choose data by activity rather than trip length
WhatsApp, hotel messages, Grab, Gojek, maps, and restaurant searches use less data than streaming, video calls, cloud photo backups, or hotspot use. Two travellers staying for the same number of days can need very different packages.
| Usage | Typical activities | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Messaging, email, ride-hailing, and occasional maps | 3–10 GB |
| Moderate | Daily navigation, browsing, social media, and some video | 13–26 GB |
| Heavy | Streaming, uploads, hotspot, or remote work | 34–68 GB |
These are starting points, not guarantees. Network performance varies by operator, location, congestion, device, and local conditions. Compare the current Bali SIM and eSIM plans after estimating your usage.
Keep your UK number for bank security texts
A compatible dual-SIM phone can keep the UK line available while the Indonesian line handles mobile data. On iPhone, select the Indonesian line under Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data. Review Allow Mobile Data Switching before enabling both lines.
Keeping a line active does not make every roaming function free. Your bank controls whether it sends OTP codes abroad, and your carrier controls roaming charges. Test access to your banking app and recovery methods before travelling.
Tourist SIM registration is not Customs IMEI registration
The airport counter registers the tourist SIM using the required customer and device information. This is separate from permanent Customs registration for an imported phone.
Travellers permanently importing or using a device in Indonesia may face different Customs and IMEI requirements. For a tourist SIM, bring the requested documents and let the counter staff complete the operator process.
Before leaving the UK
FCDO travel advice says Indonesia sets and enforces its own entry rules. For a full British citizen passport, the current guidance covers passport validity, visas, the free All Indonesia arrival declaration, and Bali’s tourist levy. Rules can change, so check the official pages again shortly before departure.
- Check the passport validity and blank-page requirements.
- Use the official Indonesian immigration website for the appropriate visa or e-VOA.
- Complete the All Indonesia arrival declaration through the official website or app.
- Check whether the Bali tourist levy applies to your trip.
- Buy travel insurance and read the conditions for scooter or motorbike use.
- Keep access to a payment card and some Indonesian rupiah for smaller businesses.
Do not use an old social-media checklist as your only source. Visa and arrival-form scams exist, so start with GOV.UK and official Indonesian government websites.
Activation problems, replacement, and refund
The counter staff test the connection before you leave. If a problem appears later, contact us within 24 hours and send a screenshot showing the issue. The team verifies the device, registration, and connection and may try a replacement first.
If activation still fails, an eligible order can be refunded. Carrier-locked or incompatible devices are handled under the current refund policy. You can switch from eSIM to physical SIM when the phone has a SIM tray, with any listed price difference payable.
Orders left uncollected for 30 days are not refundable. Read the current Refund Policy before ordering.
