Bali eSIM Guide for Travellers from India

Last updated: October 19, 2026  |  Written by: Mukhlis Saputro, Sim Card Airport Bali

Travellers from India can stay connected in Bali by roaming with Airtel, Jio, or Vi, using a global data eSIM, or collecting a local Indonesian SIM card or eSIM after landing. The right option depends on your Indian mobile plan, phone, trip length, and whether you need an Indonesian +62 number.

This Bali eSIM guide for travellers from India explains the practical differences. It also covers two details that are easy to miss: an eSIM-compatible phone must still be carrier-unlocked, and our local Bali eSIM is issued and activated at the airport counter rather than installed remotely in India.

Quick answer for Indian travellers

  • You need service for a short visit and already have a suitable roaming pack: Airtel, Jio, or Vi roaming may be enough. Confirm that Indonesia is included and check the data, call, and validity limits before departure.
  • You have an unlocked eSIM-compatible phone: A local Bali eSIM gives you Indonesian data, calls, SMS, and a +62 number while your Indian line can remain available for bank texts.
  • Your phone has a SIM tray but no eSIM support: Choose a physical SIM.
  • You use maps, Grab, Gojek, video, or hotspot data every day: Compare a local package with the total cost and allowance of Indian roaming.
  • You are unsure how much data to buy: Use our Bali data usage calculator before ordering.

Our local plans range from 3 GB to 68 GB through XL, Tri, and IM3. Every package starts with 28 days of validity. You can top up later under the operator’s current package and validity rules. eSIM and physical SIM prices may differ by up to Rp50,000.

Indian roaming or a local Bali SIM?

Roaming keeps your Indian number active and requires little setup. That can suit a short trip when your existing pack already covers Indonesia. A local SIM becomes more useful when you need more data, expect to use hotspot or video, or want a +62 number for local calls and messages.

Airtel, Jio, and Vi publish international roaming packs, but the prices, allowances, supported networks, and validity periods can change. Check Indonesia in your operator’s app or official destination page shortly before flying. Do not rely on an old screenshot or a package mentioned in a travel blog.

Global travel eSIMYou only need data across several countriesMany plans are data-only and do not include a local +62 number
Local Bali eSIMYour unlocked phone supports eSIM and you want local serviceRegistration and activation take place at our airport counter

Compare the full trip cost, not only the advertised daily price. Also check whether incoming calls, voicemail, outgoing SMS, Wi-Fi Calling, or background data can create additional charges on your Indian line.

Keep your Indian number available for OTP messages

A compatible dual-SIM phone can keep the Airtel, Jio, Vi, or other Indian line available while the Indonesian line handles mobile data. This is useful for bank alerts and account verification, but it does not guarantee that every OTP will arrive abroad. Your bank controls its delivery rules, and your Indian operator controls roaming charges.

Before leaving India:

  • Confirm that your Indian line can receive SMS while roaming.
  • Keep recovery methods for banking and payment apps up to date.
  • Turn off data roaming on the Indian line if the Bali SIM will provide data.
  • Review automatic mobile-data switching on dual-SIM phones.
  • Pause cloud backups and large app updates unless you are using Wi-Fi.

Keeping the Indian line switched on does not make calls, voicemail, SMS, or Wi-Fi Calling free. Check the terms for your exact plan.

Will an Indian phone work with a Bali eSIM?

Unlocked eSIM-compatible iPhones, Google Pixel phones, and Samsung phones can use our eSIM. Compatibility still depends on the exact model, country of purchase, software, and carrier status. Send us the full model number if you are unsure. A model name such as “Galaxy S24” is less useful than the complete code shown in Settings.

Check an iPhone before ordering

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then About.
  3. Find Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock.
  4. Look for No SIM restrictions.

Apple lists Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vi as Indian carriers supporting eSIM activation on compatible iPhones. That does not mean every phone sold in India supports every travel eSIM. The device still needs eSIM hardware, compatible software, and an unlocked carrier status.

If your phone does not support eSIM but has an unlocked nano-SIM slot, choose a physical SIM. If you discover at the counter that the device is carrier-locked or incompatible, the order can be reviewed under our refund policy. You may also switch from eSIM to physical SIM when the phone has a SIM tray, with any listed price difference payable.

Can you install the Bali eSIM in India?

You can order online before departure, but this local Indonesian eSIM is not installed remotely in India. The QR code is issued and activated at the Bali Airport counter during the operator’s tourist-SIM registration process.

Bring your passport, a screenshot of the phone’s IMEI, and the required registration photo. The QR code can be scanned once, so confirm which device will hold the eSIM before installation. The 28-day validity begins when the SIM and data package are activated.

A global travel eSIM may allow installation at home, but many global products provide data only. Our local eSIM includes an Indonesian +62 number and supports calls and SMS. Additional credit or the relevant package benefit may be required for chargeable calls and messages.

Collect your SIM after arriving at Bali Airport

After Immigration, baggage collection, and Customs, continue through the international arrival exit. The XLSMART counter is immediately to the left. Google Maps may still display the location as XL Axiata Official Partner – Bali SIM Card & eSIM Airport Pickup.

  • Opening hours: Daily, 4:00 AM–2:00 AM
  • Typical activation time: About five minutes when the documents and compatible unlocked phone are ready
  • Staff assistance: Registration, installation, mobile-data settings, and connection testing
  • Delayed flight: Collect the order at any time during opening hours

Many journeys from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and other Indian cities involve a connection. Check the scheduled arrival time in Bali local time. If you land between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, the counter will reopen at 4:00 AM.

Open the airport counter in Google Maps.

What happens at the counter?

  1. Show your order confirmation and passport.
  2. Confirm the phone model, IMEI, lock status, and preferred operator.
  3. Choose XL, Tri, or IM3 and confirm eSIM or physical SIM.
  4. Complete the operator’s tourist-SIM registration requirements.
  5. Let the staff install the physical SIM or scan the eSIM QR code.
  6. Wait while the staff test mobile data and confirm the connection.

Choose a package by activity, not only trip length

WhatsApp, hotel messages, Grab, Gojek, maps, and restaurant searches use less data than streaming, video calls, cloud photo backups, or hotspot use. Two people staying for the same number of days can need very different packages.

UsageTypical activitiesStarting point
LightWhatsApp, email, ride-hailing, and occasional maps3–10 GB
ModerateDaily navigation, browsing, social media, and some video13–26 GB
HeavyStreaming, uploads, hotspot, or remote work34–68 GB

These ranges are starting points, not guarantees. Network performance varies by operator, location, congestion, device, and local conditions. Estimate your usage, then compare the current Bali SIM and eSIM plans.

Do you need an Indonesian +62 number?

Every local eSIM and physical SIM we sell includes an Indonesian +62 number. It can make and receive calls and SMS, although additional credit or the correct package benefit may be needed.

A local number can make communication with drivers, villas, hotels, restaurants, and Indonesian services easier. It may also help with local verification, but no SIM provider can guarantee that every third-party app will accept every number or OTP request.

Tourist SIM registration is not Customs IMEI registration

The airport counter registers the tourist SIM using the required customer and device information. This is separate from permanent Customs registration for an imported phone.

Travellers permanently importing or using a device in Indonesia may face different Customs and IMEI requirements. For a tourist SIM, bring the requested documents and let the counter staff complete the operator process.

Before leaving India

Internet access helps with airport transport, hotel messages, maps, and digital travel documents, but it does not replace entry preparation. Indonesian entry rules can change, so verify them through official government sources shortly before departure.

  • Check that your passport meets Indonesia’s current validity and condition requirements.
  • Use the official Indonesian immigration website for the appropriate visa or e-VOA.
  • Complete the current arrival declaration through the official system.
  • Check whether the Bali tourist levy applies to your trip.
  • Buy travel insurance and read the conditions for scooter or motorbike use.
  • Carry a payment card and some Indonesian rupiah for smaller businesses.

Do not use an old social-media checklist as your only source. Visa and arrival-form scams exist, so begin with official Indonesian government websites.

Activation problems, replacement, and refund

The counter staff test the connection before you leave. If a problem appears later, contact us within 24 hours and send a screenshot showing the issue. The team verifies the device, registration, and connection and may try a replacement first.

If activation still fails, an eligible order can be refunded. Carrier-locked or incompatible devices are handled under the current refund policy. You can switch from eSIM to physical SIM when the phone has a SIM tray, with any listed price difference payable.

Orders left uncollected for 30 days are not refundable. Read the current Refund Policy before ordering.
