Travellers from Germany can use Telekom, Vodafone, or O2 roaming in Bali, buy a global data eSIM, or collect a local Indonesian SIM card or eSIM after landing. Indonesia is outside the EU roaming area, so a German mobile plan does not automatically work at domestic EU rates.
This Bali eSIM guide for travellers from Germany compares those options without assuming that one solution suits every trip. It covers unlocked-phone checks, keeping a German +49 number active, the time difference, airport pickup, travel outside Bali, and the registration process for a local +62 number.
Quick answer for travellers from Germany
- Your German plan includes a suitable Indonesia roaming option: roaming may be convenient for a short visit. Check the current allowance, duration, calls, SMS, and renewal rules before departure.
- You have an unlocked eSIM-compatible phone: a local Bali eSIM provides Indonesian data, calls, SMS, and a +62 number. Your German line can remain available on a compatible dual-SIM phone.
- Your phone has no eSIM support: choose a physical SIM if it has an unlocked nano-SIM slot.
- You plan to stream, work remotely, use hotspot data, or travel for several weeks: compare the full roaming cost with a local 28-day package.
- You do not know how much data you need: estimate it with our Bali data usage calculator.
Our local packages range from 3 GB to 68 GB and are available as eSIM or physical SIM through XL, Tri, and IM3. Each package starts with 28 days of validity. You can top up later under the selected operator’s current package and validity rules. The physical SIM and eSIM prices may differ by up to Rp50,000.
EU roaming does not cover Indonesia
German travellers are used to using their domestic allowance across much of the European Union. Bali is different. Indonesia falls outside the EU roaming arrangement, and the price depends on the German carrier, contract, destination group, and roaming option.
Telekom offers passes and international options for travel outside the EU. Vodafone and O2 also publish destination-based roaming terms. These offers change, and customers on older contracts may see different options from customers on newer plans. Check Indonesia in the carrier app or official roaming page shortly before flying.
| Option | Useful when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| German carrier roaming | Your visit is short and your contract offers a suitable Indonesia option | Data allowance, calls, SMS, duration, renewal, and the applicable country group |
| Global travel eSIM | You need data across several countries during one journey | Many plans are data-only and do not include an Indonesian number |
| Local Bali eSIM | Your unlocked phone supports eSIM and you want a +62 number | Registration and activation take place at our airport counter |
| Local physical SIM | Your unlocked phone has a nano-SIM slot | Keep the German SIM safe if you remove it |
Do not compare only the headline price. Check whether the roaming package includes incoming calls, outgoing calls, SMS, hotspot use, and enough data for the entire trip. Voicemail and background data can also create charges when the German line is roaming.
Keep your German number for messages and account access
A compatible dual-SIM phone can keep the Telekom, Vodafone, O2, or other German line available while the Indonesian line handles mobile data. This can help with bank messages and account verification, but it does not guarantee that every authentication message will arrive abroad.
Before leaving Germany:
- Confirm that your German line can receive SMS while roaming.
- Update recovery methods for banking, email, and payment accounts.
- Turn off data roaming on the German line if the Bali SIM will provide data.
- Check the phone’s mobile-data switching setting.
- Disable automatic cloud backups and large app updates unless you are using Wi-Fi.
Keeping the +49 line switched on does not make calls, voicemail, SMS, or Wi-Fi Calling free. The charge depends on the German carrier and plan.
Will a phone bought in Germany work with a Bali eSIM?
Unlocked eSIM-compatible iPhones, Google Pixel phones, and Samsung phones can use our eSIM. The exact model, software, country variant, and carrier status still matter. Send us the complete model number before ordering if you are unsure.
Check an iPhone before ordering
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Find Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock.
- Confirm that it shows No SIM restrictions.
Having an EID in the phone settings is another useful sign that the device supports eSIM. It does not prove that the phone is unlocked. If your phone cannot use eSIM but has a compatible unlocked SIM tray, you may switch to a physical SIM and pay any listed price difference.
Can you install the local eSIM in Germany?
You can order online before departure, but our local Indonesian eSIM is not installed remotely in Germany. The QR code is issued and activated at the Bali Airport counter during the operator’s tourist-SIM registration process.
Bring your passport, a screenshot of the phone’s IMEI, and the required registration photo. Confirm which device will hold the eSIM before scanning because the QR code can be used once. The 28-day validity starts when the SIM and data package are activated.
A global travel eSIM may allow installation at home, but it may be data-only. Our local eSIM includes an Indonesian +62 number and supports calls and SMS. Chargeable calls and messages may require additional credit or the relevant package benefit.
Collect your SIM after landing at Bali Airport

After Immigration, baggage collection, and Customs, continue through the international arrival exit. The XLSMART counter is immediately to the left. Google Maps may display the location as XL Axiata Official Partner – Bali SIM Card & eSIM Airport Pickup.
- Opening hours: daily from 4:00 AM until 2:00 AM
- Typical activation time: around five minutes when the documents and compatible unlocked phone are ready
- Assistance: registration, installation, mobile-data settings, and connection testing in English
- Delayed flight: collect the order at any time during opening hours
- Payment: Visa, Mastercard, and other supported international cards, subject to card-issuer and payment-network approval
The staff do not provide support in German. Travellers can communicate in English. If you have hired a local guide, you may also ask the guide to help translate during pickup.
Open the airport counter in Google Maps.
What happens at the counter?
- Show your order confirmation and passport.
- Confirm the phone model, IMEI, lock status, and selected operator.
- Choose XL, Tri, or IM3 and confirm eSIM or physical SIM.
- Complete the operator’s tourist-SIM registration requirements.
- Let the staff install the SIM or scan the eSIM QR code.
- Wait while the staff test mobile data and confirm the connection.

Germany and Bali are six or seven hours apart
Bali uses Central Indonesian Time (WITA), which is UTC+8 throughout the year. Germany changes between Central European Time and Central European Summer Time.
- During German summer time, Bali is six hours ahead.
- During German winter time, Bali is seven hours ahead.
When it is 9:00 AM in Berlin during summer time, it is 3:00 PM in Bali. During winter time, 9:00 AM in Berlin is 4:00 PM in Bali. This affects calls home, German banking support, work meetings, and jet lag. The commonly shared Berlin–Jakarta conversion is one hour different because Jakarta uses WIB (UTC+7), while Bali uses WITA.
Choose a package for your activity and route
WhatsApp, maps, hotel messages, and ride-hailing use less data than streaming, video calls, cloud photo uploads, or hotspot work. Trip length alone does not determine the right package.
| Usage | Typical activities | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Messaging, email, ride-hailing, and occasional maps | 3–10 GB |
| Moderate | Daily navigation, browsing, social media, and some video | 13–26 GB |
| Heavy | Streaming, uploads, hotspot use, or remote work | 34–68 GB |
The SIM can be used outside Bali across Indonesia where the selected operator has coverage. Performance varies by operator, island, terrain, congestion, weather, and device. A connection that works well in Denpasar may perform differently in rural Flores, the Gili Islands, Java, or mountain areas.
What may feel different after arriving in Bali
Travel advice works better than national stereotypes. These practical differences can affect the first few days of a German visitor’s trip:
- Travel time: Bali traffic can change quickly. Leave extra time for tours, ferries, appointments, and airport transfers.
- Communication: service conversations may feel less direct than in Germany. Confirm the time, meeting point, price, and included service in writing.
- Appointments: reconfirm drivers, villas, and activities through WhatsApp, particularly after a flight delay.
- Road use: traffic moves on the left. Do not assume that European road conditions or driving habits apply.
- Payments: cards are common at larger businesses, but rupiah remains useful for markets, parking, tips, and smaller shops.
- Temples and ceremonies: dress appropriately, follow signs, and ask before photographing people or religious activity.
- Data registration: passport and device information are required for the operator’s tourist-SIM process. This is separate from permanent Customs registration of an imported phone.
Before flying from Germany
German government travel advice for Indonesia changes as entry, health, transport, and local conditions change. Check the current page from the German Federal Foreign Office shortly before departure.
- Confirm that the passport meets Indonesia’s current validity and condition requirements.
- Use the official Indonesian immigration website for the appropriate visa or e-VOA.
- Complete the current arrival declaration through the official Indonesian system.
- Check the current Bali tourist levy requirements.
- Buy suitable travel insurance and read the conditions for scooter or motorbike use.
- Save offline copies of the passport, insurance, booking confirmations, and important phone numbers.
Activation problems, replacement, and refund
The counter staff test the connection before you leave. If a problem appears later, contact us within 24 hours and send a screenshot showing the issue. The team checks the device, registration, and connection and may try a replacement first.
If activation still fails, an eligible order can be refunded. Carrier-locked or incompatible devices are handled under the current refund policy. You can switch from eSIM to physical SIM when the phone has a compatible SIM tray, with any listed price difference payable.
Orders left uncollected for 30 days are not refundable. Read the current Refund Policy before ordering.
