US travelers arriving in Bali have three practical ways to stay connected: use an American carrier’s roaming plan, install a global data eSIM, or buy a local Indonesian SIM card or eSIM. The right choice depends on your phone, whether it is carrier-unlocked, how long you are staying, and whether you need an Indonesian +62 number.
This Bali eSIM guide for travellers from the USA explains those choices without assuming that one option suits everyone. It also covers a detail that catches many Americans by surprise: US-market iPhone 14 and newer models use eSIM and do not have a physical SIM tray.
Quick answer for US travelers
- US iPhone 14 or newer: Choose eSIM. US-market models do not accept a physical SIM card.
- Unlocked iPhone XS–13: You can usually choose eSIM or physical SIM, depending on the exact model.
- Unlocked eSIM-compatible Google Pixel or Samsung: Choose eSIM if your exact model and software support it.
- Phone with a physical SIM tray but no eSIM support: Choose a physical SIM.
- Carrier-locked phone: Contact AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or your current carrier before departure. A locked phone may reject an Indonesian SIM or eSIM.
- Not sure which plan you need: Use our Bali data usage calculator before ordering.
Our local plans are available from 3 GB to 68 GB through XL, Tri, and IM3. Each plan starts with 28 days of validity and can be extended through an operator top-up. eSIM and physical SIM prices may differ by up to Rp50,000.
Check whether your US phone is unlocked
eSIM support does not automatically mean that your phone is ready for another carrier. A phone bought through a US carrier may still be locked to that network.
How to check an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock.
- Look for No SIM restrictions.
If another message appears, contact your US carrier. Apple cannot unlock an iPhone on the carrier’s behalf. Apple also confirms that two different carriers can be used on Dual SIM only when the iPhone is unlocked.
Google Pixel and Samsung phones
Unlocked eSIM-compatible Pixel and Samsung models can use our eSIM, but compatibility still depends on the exact model, country of purchase, software, and selected network. Send us the model number before ordering if you are unsure. A marketing name such as “Galaxy S24” is less useful than the full model number shown in Settings.
Google notes that Pixel phones may be sold locked or unlocked depending on where they were purchased. US Pixel 10-series phones are eSIM-only, so they cannot use a physical SIM as a fallback.
Why US iPhones need special attention
Apple lists US-market iPhone 14, 15, and 16 families as eSIM-only. Later US-market models may also be eSIM-only. A physical Bali SIM card will not fit these phones because there is no SIM tray.
Older US iPhones may support both a nano-SIM and an eSIM. iPhone 13 and later can also support two active eSIMs, subject to the model, carrier, and software. Check the model and carrier-lock status rather than relying on the phone’s appearance.
AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon roaming vs a local Bali SIM
Roaming is convenient because it keeps your US number and requires little setup. It is not always poor value. A short-stay traveler whose plan already includes international data may reasonably keep using it.
AT&T and Verizon publish international day-pass options, while eligible T-Mobile plans may include data and texting in many destinations. Prices, speeds, allowances, and included countries depend on the plan and can change. Check your carrier account before departure rather than relying on an old travel blog.
| Option | Best for | Limit to check |
|---|---|---|
| US carrier roaming | Very short trips or plans with useful international benefits | Daily charges, speed limits, calls and background-data triggers |
| Global data eSIM | Travelers who only need internet access | Often data-only and may not include a +62 number |
| Local Bali eSIM | Unlocked eSIM phones, including eSIM-only US iPhones | Must be registered and activated at our airport counter |
| Local physical SIM | Unlocked phones with a SIM tray | Not usable in US iPhones without a physical SIM tray |
A local SIM card in Bali for tourist use becomes more practical when you need more data, local calls, SMS, or a +62 number. It also avoids using your US line for mobile data. Your US carrier may still charge for calls, texts, Wi-Fi Calling, or other activity, so confirm those rules directly with the carrier.
Can you buy a Bali eSIM online before flying?
You can place your order online, but this local Bali eSIM is not remotely installed in the United States. The QR code is issued and activated in person at the airport counter as part of the operator’s registration process.
Bring your passport, a screenshot of your phone’s IMEI, and the required registration photo. The eSIM QR code can be scanned once, so confirm the target device before installation. Its 28-day validity begins when the SIM and data package are activated.
This is different from many global travel eSIMs that can be installed at home. The tradeoff is in-person registration and setup; the benefit is a local Indonesian number, access to calls and SMS, and staff assistance before you leave the airport.
Airport pickup at Bali International Airport

Collect your order at the XLSMART counter after you pass Customs. From the international arrival exit, look to the left for the XLSMART storefront. The Google Maps listing may still appear as XL Axiata Official Partner – Bali SIM Card & eSIM Airport Pickup.
- Opening hours: Daily, 4:00 AM–2:00 AM
- Typical activation time: About five minutes when the documents and compatible unlocked phone are ready
- Staff assistance: Registration, SIM or eSIM installation, mobile-data setup, and connection testing
- Delayed flight: Pickup can be adjusted as long as you reach the counter during operating hours
If you arrive between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, the counter will be closed. Plan to return after it reopens.

What happens at the counter?
- Show your order confirmation and passport.
- Confirm your device model, IMEI, carrier-lock status, and preferred operator.
- Choose XL, Tri, or IM3 and confirm eSIM or physical SIM.
- Complete the operator’s registration requirements.
- Let the staff install the SIM or scan the eSIM QR code.
- Wait while the staff tests mobile data and confirms that the phone is connected.

Which Bali SIM package should you choose?
Do not choose a package by trip length alone. Video, hotspot use, cloud backups, and social-media uploads consume far more data than messaging or maps.
| Usage | Typical activities | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Light | WhatsApp, email, ride-hailing, occasional maps | 3–10 GB |
| Moderate | Daily maps, browsing, social media and some video | 13–26 GB |
| Heavy | Frequent video, uploads, hotspot or remote work | 34–68 GB |
These are starting points, not guarantees. Calculate your likely usage, then compare the available Bali SIM and eSIM plans. XL, Tri, and IM3 coverage and performance can vary by location, congestion, device, and network conditions.
Do you need an Indonesian +62 number?
Every local eSIM and physical SIM we sell includes an Indonesian +62 number. It can make and receive calls and SMS, although additional credit may be required depending on the package and activity.
A local number can make communication with drivers, hotels, restaurants, and Indonesian services easier. It may also help with local verification, but no SIM provider can guarantee that every third-party app will accept every number or OTP request.
How to keep your US number for bank texts
On a Dual SIM phone, you can keep your AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or other US line available for calls and texts while using the Indonesian SIM for mobile data. On iPhone, select the Indonesian line under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data.
Review Allow Cellular Data Switching and roaming settings before using both lines. Apple warns that additional carrier charges may apply. Receiving a bank text does not automatically mean that every part of your US service is free abroad.
SIM registration is not Customs IMEI registration
The airport-counter process registers the tourist SIM and pairs the service with the required customer and device information. It is not the same as permanently registering an imported phone through Indonesian Customs.
For a tourist SIM, bring the requested passport and device details and let the counter staff complete the operator process. Travelers importing or permanently using a phone in Indonesia may face different Customs and IMEI requirements.
Activation problems, replacement and refund
The staff tests the connection before you leave. If a problem appears afterward, contact us within 24 hours and provide a screenshot showing the issue. The team will verify the device, registration, and connection and may attempt a replacement first.
If activation still fails, an eligible order can be refunded. A carrier-locked or incompatible device can also be reviewed under the refund policy. A customer changing from eSIM to physical SIM pays any listed price difference. This option is only useful when the phone has a physical SIM tray.
Orders left uncollected for 30 days are not refundable. Read the current Refund Policy before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best eSIM for Bali for a US traveler?
The best choice depends on your unlocked phone, expected data use, destination, and need for a +62 number. Compare XL, Tri, and IM3 rather than assuming one network is always best everywhere in Bali.
Can a US iPhone 14 or newer use a physical Bali SIM?
US-market iPhone 14 and newer models are generally eSIM-only and do not have a physical SIM tray. Choose eSIM and confirm that the phone is carrier-unlocked.
Can I activate the Bali eSIM while I am still in the USA?
No. You can order online, but this product is issued and activated in person at the airport counter. The QR code is provided during registration and setup.
Does the SIM include an Indonesian phone number?
Yes. Both eSIM and physical SIM options include a +62 number and support calls and SMS. Credit or the correct package benefit may be required.
Do you sell a Bali eSIM Telkomsel plan?
Our current airport-pickup choices are XL, Tri, and IM3. We do not describe a product as Telkomsel unless that operator is genuinely available for the selected order.
Can I top up after 28 days?
Yes. You can add credit or buy another data package. The available extension and validity depend on the operator’s current terms, and service may be extended for up to 90 days in eligible cases.
What if my phone turns out to be carrier-locked?
Contact us within 24 hours and provide the requested screenshot. We will verify the issue and apply the current replacement or refund policy.

Order before you fly, then activate at the airport
Check that your phone is unlocked, choose a plan based on your actual data use, and place the order online. After Customs at Bali International Airport, turn left toward the XLSMART counter. The staff will complete registration, install the SIM or eSIM, and test the connection before you leave.
