Bali eSIM Guide for Travellers from Switzerland

Last updated: October 20, 2026  |  Written by: Mukhlis Saputro, Sim Card Airport Bali

Travellers from Switzerland can keep roaming with Swisscom, Sunrise, or Salt, use a global travel eSIM, or collect a local Indonesian SIM card or eSIM after landing. The right choice depends on the phone, the Swiss mobile plan, the route through Indonesia, and whether an Indonesian +62 number is useful.

This guide compares those options for a Bali holiday. It also covers dual-SIM setup, the Switzerland–Bali time difference, airport pickup, entry preparation, and why mobile data matters beyond the hotel.

Quick recommendation for Swiss travellers

  • Your Swiss plan includes enough Indonesia roaming: keeping the existing line may be convenient for a short trip. Check the exact allowance, calls, SMS, duration, and renewal rules before departure.
  • Your unlocked phone supports eSIM: a local Bali eSIM provides Indonesian data, calls, SMS, and a +62 number while a compatible dual-SIM phone keeps the Swiss +41 line available.
  • Your phone has no eSIM support: use a physical SIM if it has an unlocked nano-SIM slot.
  • You will work remotely, upload photos, stream video, or travel for several weeks: compare the full roaming cost with a local 28-day package.
  • You are unsure how much data to buy: use our Bali data usage calculator.

Our packages range from 3 GB to 68 GB. Every package is available as eSIM or physical SIM through XL, Tri, and IM3, with 28 days of initial validity. You can top up later under the selected operator’s current package and validity rules. Physical SIM and eSIM prices may differ by up to Rp50,000.

Check Swiss roaming before buying another SIM

Indonesia is outside the usual European roaming area. A plan that works across neighbouring countries may not include Bali under the same terms.

Swisscom currently lists Indonesia in its World 1 group and sells destination or zone-based packages through Swisscom Cockpit. Sunrise asks customers to select Indonesia and their exact subscription in Sunrise Cockpit. Salt also directs customers to MySalt or its roaming cost-control service to see the available destination packages.

OptionUseful whenCheck before choosing
Swiss carrier roamingYour visit is short and your subscription includes a suitable Indonesia allowanceData, calls, SMS, speed, validity, renewal, and cost limit
Global travel eSIMYou need data in several countries during one journeyMany plans are data-only and do not include a local number
Local Bali eSIMYour unlocked phone supports eSIM and you want a +62 numberRegistration and activation take place at our airport counter
Local physical SIMYour unlocked phone has a nano-SIM slotKeep the Swiss SIM safe if you remove it

Do not compare the headline data allowance alone. Check whether incoming calls, outgoing calls, SMS, hotspot use, and speed reductions are included. Set a roaming cost limit where the Swiss carrier offers one, and turn off data roaming on the +41 line if the Indonesian SIM will provide mobile data.

Keep your Swiss +41 number while using a Bali +62 number

A compatible dual-SIM phone can leave the Swiss line active for account messages while the Indonesian line handles data. This can help with bank notifications and account verification, but it does not guarantee that every authentication message will arrive abroad.

Before flying:

  • Confirm that the Swiss line can receive SMS while roaming.
  • Update recovery methods for banking, email, and payment accounts.
  • Choose the Indonesian SIM as the mobile-data line.
  • Disable automatic mobile-data switching if you want to avoid accidental Swiss roaming.
  • Check voicemail and Wi-Fi Calling charges with the Swiss carrier.

Our local eSIM and physical SIM include a +62 number and support calls and SMS. Chargeable calls and messages may require additional credit or the relevant operator benefit.

Will a phone bought in Switzerland work with a Bali eSIM?

Unlocked eSIM-compatible iPhones, Google Pixel phones, and Samsung phones can use our eSIM. The model, software, regional variant, and carrier status still matter. Send us the full model number before ordering if the settings are unclear.

Check an iPhone before ordering

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then About.
  3. Find Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock.
  4. Confirm that it shows No SIM restrictions.

An EID in the phone settings is a useful sign that the device supports eSIM, but it does not prove that the phone is unlocked. If eSIM is unavailable and the phone has an unlocked nano-SIM slot, you may switch to a physical SIM and pay any listed price difference.

Can you install the local eSIM in Switzerland?

You can order online before departure, but our local Indonesian eSIM is not installed remotely in Switzerland. The QR code is issued and activated at the Bali Airport counter during the operator’s tourist-SIM registration process.

Bring your passport, a screenshot of the phone’s IMEI, and the required registration photo. Confirm which device will hold the eSIM before scanning because the QR code can be used once. The 28-day validity starts when the SIM and data package are activated.

A global travel eSIM may allow installation before the flight, but it may provide data only. The airport-pickup option adds staff-assisted registration, setup, and connection testing, as well as a local +62 number.

Switzerland and Bali are six or seven hours apart

Bali uses Central Indonesian Time (WITA), UTC+8, throughout the year. Switzerland changes between Central European Time and Central European Summer Time.

  • During Swiss summer time, Bali is six hours ahead.
  • During Swiss winter time, Bali is seven hours ahead.

At 9:00 AM in Zurich during summer time, it is 3:00 PM in Bali. During winter time, 9:00 AM in Zurich is 4:00 PM in Bali. Plan calls to family, Swiss bank support, and work meetings around this difference.

Why mobile data matters beyond the airport

A published interview with a Swiss family living in Sanur describes using WhatsApp and Gojek for appointments, transport, and food orders, while also travelling to northern and eastern Bali and nearby islands. One family’s experience does not represent every Swiss visitor, but it shows why hotel Wi-Fi alone may not cover a normal day in Bali.

Navigation, driver messages, ferry updates, accommodation check-in, translation, and digital payments often happen while travellers are away from the hotel. The SIM can also work outside Bali across Indonesia where the selected operator provides compatible service. Coverage and performance vary by island, terrain, congestion, weather, and device.

Choose a package for the way you travel

UsageTypical activitiesStarting point
LightMessaging, email, ride-hailing, and occasional maps3–10 GB
ModerateDaily navigation, browsing, social media, and some video13–26 GB
HeavyStreaming, uploads, hotspot use, or remote work34–68 GB

Trip length alone does not determine the right package. A short remote-work stay may use more data than a three-week holiday with reliable hotel Wi-Fi.

Entry checklist for Swiss passport holders

Entry rules can change. Confirm the current requirements with Indonesian Immigration, the Indonesian representation in Switzerland, and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs before departure.

  • Check the passport’s remaining validity and physical condition.
  • Choose the correct visa or e-VOA for the purpose and length of the stay.
  • Keep proof of onward travel and the first accommodation address available.
  • Complete the current Indonesian arrival declaration through the official system.
  • Check the current Bali Tourist Levy requirement separately from the visa.
  • Save the passport, visa, flight, accommodation, insurance, and levy confirmation offline.

Third-party travel guides can be useful checklists, but the official government sources control the entry decision. Avoid treating a CHF conversion shown by a travel site as a fixed government price because exchange rates change.

Activation problems, replacement, and refund

The counter staff test the connection before you leave. If a problem appears later, contact us within 24 hours and send a screenshot showing the issue. The team checks the device, registration, and connection and may try a replacement first.

If activation still fails, an eligible order can be refunded. Carrier-locked or incompatible devices are handled under the current refund policy. You can switch from eSIM to physical SIM when the phone has a compatible SIM tray, with any listed price difference payable.

Orders left uncollected for 30 days are not refundable. Read the current Refund Policy before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for Bali for a Swiss traveller?

The best choice depends on the unlocked phone, Swiss subscription, route, data use, trip length, and need for an Indonesian number. Compare XL, Tri, and IM3 for the planned destinations rather than assuming one operator is best everywhere.

Does European roaming apply in Bali?

Do not assume it does. Indonesia is priced according to the Swiss carrier’s international roaming zones and the customer’s exact subscription. Check Swisscom Cockpit, Sunrise Cockpit, or MySalt before departure.

Can I buy a Bali eSIM online from Switzerland?

Yes. You can order before departure, then collect and activate it at the Bali Airport counter. This local Indonesian eSIM is not installed remotely in Switzerland.

Can I keep my Swiss SIM active?

A compatible dual-SIM phone can keep the +41 line available while the Indonesian line provides data. Check charges for calls, voicemail, SMS, and Wi-Fi Calling.

Can I use the SIM outside Bali?

Yes, wherever the selected operator provides compatible service in Indonesia. Coverage and performance vary by location and local conditions.
